We were in Essaouira from Dec 27 – 30. We found the men there to be more aggressive than elsewhere in morocco and and shopkeepers seemed to take it personally when we didn’t want to enter their shops but neither of this things detracted from Essaouira’s appeal. On the up side, bargaining was less intense than Marrakesh. I often walked away empty handed since I refused to pay more than 50% of initial asking price. That surprised me given previous bargaining experiences.
For my friends and I, Essaouira was the place of relaxation with the sea as our backdrop. We did some shopping in the medina but mostly walked around enjoying the atmosphere and ocean views. We went to the spa for hammam and massage experiences. I had the ceremonial hammam experience with a body wrap and a neck and shoulder massage. I had quite a bit of skin taken off me (noticed some abrasion later) and didn’t really find the hammam relaxing although I felt very clean afterward. The massage was relaxing but too short. It was over just as I started dozing.
We talked about taking a cooking class, quad tour, horseback tour, etc. But in the end we slept late, had leisurely meals and reveled in a slow pace of life in Essaouira.
