On my third day in Hanoi, T and I went to Ninh Binh, which happens to be her home town. Her father kindly drove us there and waited for us all day as we explored.
We went to three main areas: Tráng An Cô, Dragon path?? and Bird Island.
In the first stop, we took a boat on the river. We happened to be with a group of teachers who were on a trip to celebrate Vietnamese teachers day, which they get off from school. The amazing thing about that trip is that they brought a microphone with them for karaoke on their trip and did some singing during the boat ride!
Next, we went to do some hiking. We wanted to see the blooming lotus flowers but there were none at the time. So instead, we hiked up to see the dragon. There are two possible paths. We did the higher, less steep one but that was enough for me given my fear of heights. Some of the steps were quite tall. I told T she could climb the other one and I’d wait since she loves climbing but she was too polite and left with me.
Our final stop was to visit bird island. It’s quite a large ground where they are clearly working on creating flowers and beautiful spaces to entice visitors. We were short on time and mainly stopped for one reason: to visit bird island.
Bird island is a short 10 minute boat ride away. It’s a conservation area with signs to remind people to be quiet. We were there about 16:30 and saw a lot of birds. It’s spectacular seeing them all perched on the sides of the hills in the area!
We originally planned to spend the night in Ninh Binh but changed that plan because it was my last chance to meet up with a friend for dinner before leaving to Halong Bay the next day.
