The Real Thing: Lessons on Love and Life from a Wedding Reporter’s Notebook is a book of stories, each contained in a short paragraph.
Ellen McCarthy worked as a wedding reporter for the Washington Post. In this book, she shares many stories of love and marriage. She attended weddings each week for years and talked to many researchers and experts in love. She presents lessons from people who have been in love and who have married. Some of the people interviewed were divorced but still believed in love. Of the married people, some have been together for decades. This apples to both Ellen’s parents and the parents of her husband.
The stories in The Real Thing all reveal a strong belief in romantic love as an essential part of the human experience. Perhaps the advice offered by couples and researchers, including John Chapman, will be helpful in your own relationship(s).
I found this a quick read. I’ve read the work of Dr. Chapman and others, and didn’t find any of the advice to be new or ground breaking. If you’re looking for a book to refresh your belief in romantic love, or just want to read a light, positive book about other people’s relationships, love and marriage, this fits.
