Akimbo by Seth Godin
Akimbo is a new podcast by Seth Godin, first presented on Feb. 14, 2018. According to the podcast’s homepage,
"Akimbo's a podcast about our culture and about how we can change it. About seeing what's happening and choosing to do something".
I’ve listened to most of the episodes, the most recent of which was episode 5. I actually listened to this episode twice because I was a bit too distracted the first time to fully understand the implications of the research.
Takeaway
My takeaway was that it’s difficult to be a hit, so aim for consistency, and keep showing up, and keep doing the work for a greater share of the long tail. Seth gave an example of an artist who sells 1 or 2 copies of her work on Amazon each year. That’s good for Amazon since they have a lot of those light sales, but not so lucrative for the artist. He contrasts that with his ~7000 blog posts which gets at least 1-2 visitors every day in addition to possibly attracting whales. Although both he and the artist belong to the long tail, he has a greater share of the long tail through the volume of his posts.
I actually e-mailed Seth about this episode. He emailed right back. The email was brief but fully answered my question.
Should You Listen
I’ve followed Seth’s blog for years, and read his books. I also follow his blog and regularly read his posts because they make me think, and introduce new perspectives on familiar situations. If you’re curious about the world and how to live in it, listen to an episode of Akimbo. Episodes have been of different length from 20-33 minutes so it’s easy to try out an episode to see if it interest you.
