I lined up on airline travel related lines nine times in the span of six hours at Logan airport. There was the line to check in for LH423 BOS – FRA. Next came the line to pay my excess baggage fees followed by the line where the employees learned what a digital frame is when the x-ray machine revealed a strange looking electronic device in my hand luggage. Then there was the line to find out what to do about my connection from FRA (that I would miss) once Lufthansa announced a 4 hour flight delay. After standing unmoving for 30 minutes in the ever lengthening line for ticketing, I verified that I was in the correct line by asking the agent. She told me that I could also go to the check-in counter. I changed to the faster moving check-in line. It turns out that I was mislead by the ticketing agent; the agent at the check-in counter could not help me. I’d lost my position in the priority sequence on the ticketing line. There were then three more people in front of me than the previous time.
I finally got to the ticketing agent and managed to get rerouted through CDG (Paris) and IST (Istanbul). Shortly thereafter, LH423 was altogether canceled and all luggage had been unloaded. I picked up my luggage from the carousel and lined up to check in at Air France. Then I lined up to pay excess baggage for Air France/Turkish Airlines (which was $100 more expensive than with Lufthansa). Then I lined up for security clearance again and eventually for boarding.
But hey, it all paid off. I was on my way, already mentally that much closer to Khartoum, my final destination.
